Volume 2 contains 42 series each of which forms the basis for 3-4 initial lessons at the teacher’s discretion. Students learn more than 220 verbs. Volume 2 presents series for first person and third person (singular and plural) throughout the volume. Series are primarily in the present, indicative tense, though students begin learning series for “yesterday” from Series 1 and the idea of learning the series for “tomorrow” is presented by Series 8. Some of the series are quite long and use multiple tenses and cases. The verbs learned build on those in Volume I so that the student will already know some of the verbs in a series and yet find plenty of new ones, e.g., to choose, enjoy, be frustrated, forget, measure, admire, be ashamed, converse, chew, stretch, knock, and even to grimace.
All students would benefit from having a French/English dictionary to find nouns that help them make new sentences. For instance, I can chase my friend and my dog. What else can I chase? Advanced students should revisit earlier series and figure them out and write them for different cases and verb tenses. 501 French Verbs can be an excellent resource for completing that exercise. High school students who faithfully complete that exercise throughout the volume and ask questions of each other using the new cases and tenses will know more of the language than is covered in a traditional high school course.
Should I order the accompanying audio files?
The hardback volume has a linen cover with an inlaid, gold foil design, and it is printed on high quality paper. It is printed in the spirit of high quality books preferred by Charlotte Mason. The hardback volumes are typeset so when the book is opened, the English series and Spanish series are presented as mirror images on opposite pages. This allows your eye to glide easily from the English verbs to the Spanish verbs–from the English sentences to the Spanish sentences.
The eBook is a cost saving option (lower in price, no shipping cost) with the same content as the hardback format. The eBook does not maintain the mirrored display of the two languages but is typeset for readers that generally display one page at a time. The eBook is designed to be used as an eBook, e.g., a user navigates through the eBook with icons and links; there are no page numbers. A series can be printed out, if desired.
The audio files are not essential to the method. If you have no experience with Spanish or you wish to hear a native speaker, we recommend that you purchase the Spanish Volume 1 audio files. Please note, the audio files are not a replacement for the book. Charlotte Mason’s method cannot be taught with the audio files alone.
